Southern Swing rota for 12 people: 4 teams of 3 on 8-hour shifts
Southern Swing takes 12 people as 4 teams of 3 and gives each team a whole week on one shift before moving it to the next: a week of mornings, a week of afternoons, a week of nights, always in that order. Nobody's shift changes from one day to the next. It changes once a block, and it always moves later in the day.
Every day of the grid puts 9 of the 12 on duty, 3 to each shift, and each person averages 42 hours a week on 8-hour shifts. Full weekends off come out at 13 a year, and all 4 teams get the same 13.
The grid runs 364 days from whatever date you start it, which is 13 turns of the same 4 weeks. Read down a team line rather than across a date. On this pattern the useful question is not which shift someone is working today, it is which block they are in and how far through it they are.
