Bump Scheduling

Bump scheduling is the practice of rotating people between positions inside a shift through a chain of relief handoffs, where an arriving worker takes over a position and the person leaving it walks on to the next one rather than going idle. Each handoff is a bump, and one relief stepping onto the floor can move four or five people before the chain settles.

The word carries two unrelated meanings, and the one that dominates published writing is not the operational one, so it is worth separating them before going further.

Two meanings, one word

  • Seniority bumping: the contractual right of a longer serving employee to displace a less senior colleague when a role is cut or a layoff is announced. It is settled by the collective agreement, it changes who holds a job, and it is what most labor relations literature means by bumping.
  • Relief bumping: the operational handoff described on this page. It takes about as long as one spoken sentence, it changes nothing about anyone's employment, and it repeats dozens of times a day across attractions, stadiums, kitchens, and large format retail.

Both senses live in the same buildings, sometimes in the same conversation, so a rotation policy written for a represented workforce should name the operational sense explicitly. Displacement rights belong to the collective agreement and to the scheduling laws that apply to the site, and a within-shift rotation plan has no business touching them.

How a bump chain cascades

A bump is not a swap. Two people trading places is the rare case; the normal one is a cascade ending at the break room.

  1. A relief leaves the break area and walks to the first position on the chain.
  2. A relieves B, and tells B where to go next as part of the same sentence.
  3. B walks to C's position, relieves C, and repeats the instruction.
  4. C walks to the break area, and becomes the relief that starts the next chain.

Because every leg of that chain costs walking, the moves land minutes apart instead of on one clock tick. That stagger is the defining property of the pattern. It is also why walk time is a planning input and not a rounding error: a chain built without it either strands a position or steals the difference from somebody's break.

What the plan needs before anyone can be bumped

  • Which positions are gated by a live certification, since a chain that routes an uncertified person into a safety critical spot stops the operation.
  • How long each position can be held, which tightens sharply for outdoor heat, cold, and costume work.
  • The walking distance between every pair of positions on the chain, including cross site moves between cost centres.
  • A record of which positions each person has already held today, since variety across the shift is the whole point.

Planning the chain rather than the individual move is what separates this from ordinary shift work, and it is the mechanic at the centre of intrashift scheduling.

Why this matters for planners and team leads

The unit a planner has to get right is the chain, not the assignment. Move one person and four others move with them, so a change that looks local on paper arrives on the floor as a ripple through half an area. Planners who think in single slots keep discovering that at the worst possible moment.

Two failure modes account for most of the pain. A chain that routes somebody into a certification gated position they do not hold stops the operation outright, and a chain built without walking distance quietly eats the break it was meant to deliver. Both are avoidable at plan time and expensive at run time.

There is a fairness argument too. Rotation exists because nobody should spend eight hours on the same till or the same platform, so the plan should track who has already taken the hard positions today. Example in practice

A stadium concourse team of eleven covers four fixed points on an event day: two till positions, a queue host, and a runner keeping the back bar stocked. Rotation runs every fifty minutes, because the tills are hard on the feet and the runner slot is hard on the back.

At 18:40 the area lead sends the first relief out. She reaches till two at 18:43, tells the cashier he is going to the queue line, and takes the register. He walks over, relieves the host, and the host walks to the runner slot. The runner goes on break. Four people moved on one relief, and no position stood empty for longer than a handshake.

At 19:20 a till goes down. The lead drops that position out of the chain and rebuilds the remaining loop around three points, which stretches each turn to sixty five minutes. Everyone learns their new next position the same way they always do, from the person relieving them.
