Mental health first aid is the qualification most organisations count once and never again. The course is two days, the badge goes on the intranet, and three years later the list of mental health first aiders is a list of people who were trained in a different job, on a different floor, some of whom have left. MHFA England puts the validity at three years and recommends the Refresher, and the practical reason to hold to that is not the rule but the list: a refresh is the moment the organisation finds out who is still here and still willing.

Validity feeds that question directly. A team that holds four trained people of whom two lapsed a year ago is holding two, and the groups those two lapsed holders were meant to serve have nobody current.
