Does Your Position in a Time Zone Affect Productivity?

Clock time is political, solar time is geographic, and the distance between them shows up in sleep and economic outcomes.

The evidence in one line

A spatial regression-discontinuity study using US time-zone borders found that an extra hour of natural evening light reduced sleep by an average of 19 minutes and increased insufficient sleep (Giuntella & Mazzonna, 2019). Outside commuting zones spanning the border, income was about 3% lower on the later-sunset side. Longitude is not the biological cause. The exposure is a mismatch between solar light timing and legal clock schedules, and income is not a direct task-productivity measure.

The same clock hour can mean different solar time

Within a time zone, sunset generally occurs later as you move west. Work and school start times rarely shift by the same amount, so people on the later-sunset side can receive more evening light while still facing the same morning clock. Giuntella and Mazzonna (2019) used the abrupt clock change at US time-zone borders to compare nearby places with discontinuously different sunset times.

An additional hour of evening daylight reduced sleep by 19 minutes on average and made insufficient sleep more likely. The study calls the resulting mismatch social jetlag: social obligations follow legal clock time while light continues to influence biological timing. This is why raw longitude or a country label is a poor exposure measure without time-zone position and local solar timing.

Productivity is inferred through economic outcomes

Income was approximately 3% lower on the later-sunset side when counties in commuting zones spanning the border were excluded (Giuntella & Mazzonna, 2019). That restriction matters because cross-border commuting can equalize wages. Income is an economic outcome, not a direct count of tasks completed, so the study supports a productivity-cost interpretation without measuring individual efficiency at a workstation.

German longitudinal evidence provides a second route. Using temporal and local sunset variation, Costa-Font et al. (2024) found one additional hour of weekly sleep was associated with 1.6 percentage points higher employment and 3.4% higher weekly earnings. Working time fell rather than rose, while self-reported task efficiency and mental wellbeing improved, which points toward productivity rather than simply more hours.

What this means for your schedule

  • For distributed teams, compare local sunrise and sunset with required start times rather than treating everyone in one time zone as having the same light exposure.
  • Avoid inferring an individual workerโ€™s capacity from location; these studies estimate population patterns and cannot predict a personโ€™s productivity.
  • Test later winter starts or flexible opening windows where business coverage permits, then measure sleep, lateness, output, and service levels locally.

The business case

A single clock-time policy across a wide geography can create different biological demands, especially near the western edge of a time zone.

The research justifies testing location-aware start windows, but it does not supply a universal longitude adjustment or promise a 3% productivity gain.

Frequently asked questions

Does longitude directly change the circadian clock?
No. Light is the biological cue. Longitude affects when sunrise and sunset occur relative to legal clock time inside a time zone. The operational mismatch appears when work or school keeps a rigid clock schedule while evening light delays sleep timing.
What did the time-zone border study find?
An extra hour of natural evening light reduced average sleep by 19 minutes and increased insufficient sleep (Giuntella & Mazzonna, 2019). In areas without cross-border commuting-zone overlap, income was also about 3% lower on the later-sunset side.
Is income the same as productivity?

Should western locations simply start work later?
The evidence supports testing that idea, not imposing a universal rule. Customer coverage, commuting, school times, chronotype, and season all matter. A controlled local pilot with output and wellbeing measures is more defensible than converting degrees longitude into a fixed schedule adjustment.
